I'm have a problem with my desktop. The icons are now black blocks, and restarting and changing my desktop theme etc. didn't fix it. Here's a screenshot:

Any suggestions anyone might have on fixing this would be much appreciated.

Find didn't find shelliconcache.dll. It was searching the correct drive, but it said no results to display. Do you know where it is, or possibly another option?

Heh - it's shelliconcache period - no extension - and it should be in the Windows folder. Rename or delete, it gets rebuilt next boot. In 9x a Safe Mode start will do it too, not sure about ME.

Why don't they make computers that will do what we think we want them to do?

You rebooted, of course.

Hmmm - those are a mess, quicklaunch too I see. Any other symptoms?

Not really - you've already tried different themes - does changing the resolution have any effect?

I'm actually trying to help my sister with this. She hasn't noticed any other symptoms, and we've tried all that.

Ok, well, deleting the icon cache was worth a shot.

Not all that conversant with ME - reaching, but you could have a look at your Active Desktop settings, DirectX and video drivers - even a rollback with scanreg or a system restore might prove helpful.

Perhaps someone can offer something a bit more definitive.

Have you tried booting the system into Safe Mode and then rebooting back into normal mode. That process will remove the ShellIconCache file and several others forcing a rebuild.

I have seen messed up Icons like that after virus (or disk damage) trashed one of the system files that builds the Icons. Shell32.dll would be one to check and compare with a good copy. Also TweakUI can sometimes cause this type of problem.

When my icons got messed up and deleting shelliconcache didn't work, I changed the screen resolution to a different value (say 640 x 480) and colours to 256. Then I changed them back to the old values and the icons were restored.

That works as well,Brim...but beforsearching for and deleting the "shelliconcache" file, show hideden files and folders must be activated via Folder Options/view,which I believe was not mentioned above. ;-)

Well, there's the assumption that it was found, since we were told "That didn't fix it"

If the cache has been corrupted, that should do it - but that may not be the case here.
