Desktop icons have changed apperanc

Turned on my computer this morning and the desktop icons had what looked to be a gear on top of almost all of them When I refresh the desktop they look normal for a couple of seconds then the gear pops back on top of them. I think the kid changed something while I was at work last night and restoreing didn't change them back.Any help would be appreciated.Thankd Bud72058
