I'm repairing a computer I sold about 6 months ago. It was virus infected & had over 400 spyware programs. I was able to clean it up w/o formatting & it seems to be running good, but I have an odd icon on the desktop that I can't get rid of. It looks like a standard folder icon but it has dual arrows on it similar to the recycle bin...it's labelled "Subscription Folder". I tried Google & came up empty. If I right click on it, the only option I get is "create shortcut". It won't drag to the recycle bin. I looked in Windows/Desktop & it's not listed, & it won't delete from safe mode. I ran regedit, found "subscription folder" & deleted it, but all that did was delete the label...the icon remains. I've tried RegCleaner & am currently rerunning Norton Anti-V. Any ideas? Something I missed?

Thanks in advance

Have you made sure that you have selected to see hidden files?

Hmm! I have searched all my usual places for your problem. As you have probably already tried right clicking the desktop and gone into the custimize desktop settings with no joy I am at a loss. You might try going to spywareinfo or spyware warrior. They both have "hijackthis" available. Download it and post your "hijackthis' at those sites to see if they can find the culprit.

I am probably wrong, as usual but here is a thought. You mention that you are running Norton A-V. This icon may have come from the Symantec Subscription Service program. I have seen Norton AV do some strange things over the years.

"This icon may have come from the Symantec Subscription Service program"

I considered that...the problem is, no Norton products were installed on the computer when I 1st got it back. He was running eztrust anti-v...unless he installed & removed Norton? I removed eztrust & replaced it with Norton 2004.

I'm starting to think it has something to do with the stupid theme he was using. I had a similar icon related problem with a PC I'd built a few months ago that came back for virus & spyware removal. I'm gonna look into that next....

Damn, I was so close the 1st time around, but I just missed it. For anyone that's interested, it was the registry listing for "Subscription Folder". I should have caught my mistake & it's basically listed in my initial question:

"I ran regedit, found "subscription folder" & deleted it, but all that did was delete the label...the icon remains"

EXACTLY! All I did was delete the name...I didn't delete the icon. I did some googling & found the proper key...I deleted the enire entry (not just the label), rebooted & the icon was gone. This site gave the registry info I needed...scroll down to "Table A-2 Desktop Tab":

Thanks for the suggestions
