Need a spot of advice from Dell users (US Dell users in particular). About upgrading memory (RAM) in a Dell dimension 2400 machine.
My friend's 14 yr old son has just got his first computer (above), and obviously, first thing he want's to do is stick games on it.
He asked me if there was anything he could do to tweak it a little. I checked his specs over for him and apart from being a little short (for modern online kinda gaming) on HDD space (40Gb), and memory (256Mb), he's ok.
I told him XP, and games in general, wouldn't complain with a little extra memory thrown at it. So I told to start saving his magic beans, and if it was ok with his folks, then head for an additional 256 Mb stick of RAM.
After I'd said that to him, I thought about his Dell warranty, and wondered if he bought his new RAM from somewhere local to him, and he opened the Dell case up and installed it himself.
** Would he be invalidating his (US) Dell warranty in anyway, shape or form ? **
I know here in the UK "some" manufacturers stipulate really dumb conditions on what you can and can't do to your box.Anyways, I got this from the Dell KB:
Where can I find information on upgrading the memory on my Dellâ„¢ computer?
And obviously, they say -- Go to Support.Dell.Com. and buy from there.
I'm thinking it's gotta be cheaper for him to shop somewhere local and buy. It doesn't say in that KB article that he CAN'T shop around for his memory.
Bahhh ! ...you get the gist. Bit of "US Dell" clarification, please :)
I don't want his folks busting my balls over this because he opened the case and installed some RAM and invalidated the warranty. :p
While I'm here, anyone got some US games store sites, with good value prices he can look at ? He's into, FF11, Diablo2, Age of Empires etc ...etc ..etc .etc.Thanks
Viking

Viking,
I'd naturally suggest contacting a warm body at Dell first but, that can be troublesome now days.
The other suggestion is to find compatible memory from crucial, etal and just stick it in. It could always be removed for any warranty considerations.
As far as games go, I don't run out and pay fifty bucks for a new game. Period. Usually the best deals I find are in the big box stores about six months later when the stuff they couldn't sell for 39.95 or 49.95 is priced at 14.95 just to get it off the shelves. Games don't have a very long "shelf life" and prices usually drop dramatically.

Okie dok, thanx Skip. :)
I persuaded him to shop around for his games. The warranty question, well, I've told him to fine read it and it'd give him some real world experience of "small print" for future reference.
But if anyone does happen to know off the very very top of their heads, then stick it down below. TY. :)

Testing testing blah blah blah
I got some people say it's this way
I got some people say it's that way
And then some people say there's no wayHell, I know
See that IDIOT walk
See that idiot TALKWALK IDIOT WALK
