Hey everyone! Hope everyone is having a safe and Merry Christmas holiday. I have a little question. Is it safe to delete .tmp files? I have alot of these files scattered all over my disk and don't think I need any of them. Are they important? They take up about 1 gb of my hard drive. And is slowing my computer down. I don't wanna do anything yet before I get some advice . Thanks for your help.

As far as I know, the temp files can all be deleted. If you delete the cookies, you might have to reinstall small programs like MSN Messenger or Chat Room from time to time. I don't think anything serious will happen. Word processors, and albeit most of the other programs, but in particular Microsoft Works and Word, create .tmp files automatically, which are back ups of your documents. All pests in my opinion.

Yes it is safe to delete .tmp (temporary files). Most of them are leftovers from installing and uninstalling programs.

Only delete the .tmp files after a restart.
They are placed as a .tmp because the program needs to add files or overwrite files with a more recent version which can only be done outside Windows so it creates a .tmp file to perform the task when you reboot.

This is why after installing some programs you are prompted to reboot the computer to complete the install.

The files that could not be written while running Windows are then installed before Windows is loaded.

Once you reboot it is safe to delete the files.

Hope you and yours had a Happy and Safe Christmas also.

Take Care,
Mesich

You can also run System Tools - Disk CleanUp utility. It cleans out some of the temp files, old Internet files, old cookies and the Recycle Bin for you. You should run it before doing a Defrag.
