I was able to remove the _RESTORE folder two weeks ago. This folder can become huge, so you should see how much free disk space you have before removing it. Then you must follow the steps below. My instructions may sound like "baby talk", but I just want to help everyone, including those who may have very little experience. So, you might want to print these steps as the process is a bit long, but not really difficult.

1. Go to Start/Run, write msconfig and press Enter.
Click on the "Startup" tab and remove the checkmarks in the *StateMgr and PCHealth boxes. Click on OK, then restart Windows as required.

2. Next right-click on My PC and go to Properties/Device Manager/Performance/File System/Troubleshooting. Check the "Disable System Restore" box. Click on OK, then restart Windows when you're prompted to do so.

3. In order to remove the _RESTORE folder from your hard drive, you'll need to start your machine in DOS mode. To do so, you must insert a Win Me or Win98 boot disk before turning on your computer.
After a couple of minutes you'll see a menu with three or four options, depending on whether you're using a Win98 or Win Me boot disk. Choose any option except "Help". when you see the A:\ prompt you must type c: and press Enter.

4. The _RESTORE directory is a system folder, and that's why you can't remove it right away. You'll have to unhide it and its contents. At the c:\ prompt you should type attrib -r -a -s -h _RESTORE\*.* and press Enter (be careful to leave a blank space before each "-" sign).

6. Change to your _RESTORE folder by typing cd _RESTORE and pressing Enter.

6. If you type dir and press Enter again, you'll see the files and sub-folders contained in the _RESTORE folder.

7. There are usually several files and five folders there. You must empty each of those folders before you can delete them. After that, you'll be able to remove the _RESTORE folder.

8. The folders found inside the _RESTORE directory are called Archive, Extract, Logs, SFP, and Temp. We'll have to change to each folder at a time to erase their contents.

9. Type cd archive and press Enter. Type del *.* and press Enter again in order to delete all the files contained in that folder. This may take from a few seconds to several minutes, depending on the number of files to be deleted.

10. Type rd archive and press Enter. This will remove this folder.

11. Then type cd extract and press Enter. Type del *.* and press Enter again. This folder will also be emptied. When this is done, write rd extract and press Enter. The Extract folder will go, too.

12. Type cd logs and press Enter. Type del *.* and press Enter again. A few seconds later type rd logs and press Enter. Another folder is gone!

13. Next type cd sfp and press Enter. Type del *.* and press Enter once again. A few moments later type rd sfp and press Enter, and no more logs folder!

14. Next type cd temp and press Enter. Type del *.* and press Enter again. This folder is usually the biggest, so the deletion process may take from several minutes to an hour or more this time. When the deletion process has finished, type rd temp and press Enter.

15. Write dir and press Enter to see the remaining contents of the _RESTORE folder. You'll see some files listed there.

16. To delete those files, type del *.* and press Enter.

17. If there are no more folders nor files in the _RESTORE directory, now change to you root directory (type cd.. or cd\ and press Enter).

18. Type rd _RESTORE and press Enter to remove this folder.

19. You can restart you computer now. If the _RESTORE folder ever reappears (which is unlikely to happen), you should be able to delete it from Windows Explorer in the future.

20. If you ever have to reinstall Windows ME, the _RESTORE folder will come back, of course. In order to remove it, you'll have to repeat the above process all over again.

Hope this has been of help. When you're finished, it would be interesting for you to see and compare how much disk space you have now. In fact, the _RESTORE folder can be huge, and people that have small hard drives can benefit from its removal.
