I need to delete a corrupt file, but conventional means are uneffective. I need to delete it in dos but I can't type the file name because it contains characters that I can't type. For example, it contains the "R" inside of a circle. I can't type that. I tried to find it using dir in Dos, but it wasn't there. What can I do?

Aaron,

What is the name of the file you are trying to delete? (Exactly) To show me where the ® is, put a * mark, ok.

Why can't you rename the file and then delete it ?

Hi Aaron

I was just reading an instructional book on DOS and it says that you can use wild cards in some instances.

For a single charactor it is ?
and for a group of charactors it is * (an astrix)

Hope this helps.

Regards

Janset, in DOS, the asterisk is one of the forbidden characters that may not appear in a filename. A trick that used to work for me was to change the filename to something more likeable and then delete. HTH.

What about DOS DELETE ?

DOS Delete version 1.0
http://home.earthlink.net/~rmbox/Reticulated/Toys.html
DOS based Freeware for Windows 95/98/ME by rmbox

Deletes Archive, Hidden, Read-only files and all their combinations. Deletes any and all "access denied" files.

Does not delete system files by design.
(Yes, that means "access denied" system files as well)

Click on dd-setup.com to install.

After the install there will be a ReadMe file in the Toy Box folder located in the Start button's Programs menu.

To delete a file, right click on the desired file and select "Delete with ms-dos" from the menu.

Warning - files deleted with ms-dos will not be recoverable.

Have you tried in SAFE MODE ?

Alternatively........
If you can drag it into the recycle bin, then delete the recycle bin. In win ME it is rebuild by Windows, even if it protected by Norton System Works 2002.

I can't delete two files either

using scan disk, it says I have two folders with the same name. Delete the upper one, then run scan disk. I can not delete either file. I have tried to rename it,compress it and drag it to the recycling bin. Even tries to cut and paste to the recycling bin. IT WON'T GO AWAY.

It says that it can't find it when I double click on it. Like it's a file name, but nothing in it.

Tim5200,

First thing, you should start your own question, and not post it in someone elses. Do that the next time, please.

With that said, what/where is this folder/file. Are you POSITIVE, you want to delete this file/folder? Also, are you sure it's not needed?

Do you have a startup disk(EBD)?
Have you ever started your computer, with a startup disk?

I need to know, if this a File or Folder.

scandisk says it is a folder, but it's an mpg.

I downloaded it from Grokster.

It's in Grokster/mygrokster folder

It's definately not needed. I think I have a start up disk, but I have never used one.
