I had to delete two files that had been unrepairable. They are:
C://windows/sp.reg and C://windows/sp.dll
How can I replace those files with new ones now?? Anyone know??

from seattletimes.com
A. Your home page has been "hijacked." Something you
downloaded from the Internet, even if you didn't know it, has
changed your system files to reset your home page to
www.topsearcher.com.A little research turned up some things for you to try to solve the
problem. Apparently, the culprit is a file named SP.DLL.Try this: Locate the Msconfig utility. In Windows XP, for example,
you'll find it in the PCHEALTH \HELPCTR\BINARIES subdirectory.
Then launch it. Go to the Start tab and look for this line:sp regedit -s C:\windows\sp.dll. Uncheck that box and see if that
fixes your problem.Alternatively, if you feel comfortable editing the Windows registry,
you can locate the appropriate entry manually and eliminate it. You'll
want to go to the Regedit utility and navigate to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows
\CurrentVersion\Run. Locate the entry that reads regedit -s sp.dl
and delete that key. Finally, search your hard drive for the file named SP.DLL and
delete it.

THANKS
went in and found 2 sp.dll files but no sp.reg , I'll burn them after a day or so just to be sure THANKS, Jim

erm i have the same problem but on Win98 my McAfee deleted the files 'sp.reg' and 'sp.dll' now when i start up i have 'could not find sp.reg' as an error message any ideas i heard from someone that 'sp.reg' and 'sp.dll' are spy bots? is this true and if so how can I get rid of the error on startup
Graham

Hi
Yes thanks, it is a key left behind by the virus,
I went into start/run- type in regedit- then go to
folder: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows
\CurrentVersion\Run.
Locate the entry that reads reg -s sp.dl and delete that key. (line) That fixed it for me Thanks People
regards DJRichardson. Warning dont remove it if your not sure
Windows help with tell you how to restore the registry if you fail i recommend you read that first.

I just had the same problem: sp.reg error message. I ran AdAware and apparenty deleted the virus using it. I solved my problem by using a Start Up Control Panel that allows you to manually choose what programs run on Start Up of Windows. If anyone is shy about RegEdit, using the Start Up Control Panel to stop sp.reg from running is an excellant alternative.

Jeeez, this thing is annoying...I must have picked it up a little while ago, and was wondering why my browser kept picking up different settings everytime I was restarting my PC...very annoying, but not hard to fix once you remove the files and from the HD and registry..I actually found the sp.reg file and found that it was updating my browser, but I wouldn't have known it was part of a virus... Thanks for posting that..

Hi,
I had the same problem with sp.reg. MacAfee came up and said it was a infected. I too have windows 98 and it says there is an error in not finding it. Now I went to regedit and only found HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE this not all of what was posted and there was nothing in there about sp.reg or sp.dll.
But under my windows folder there is a sp.dll
I guess I don't understand this virus. Cause why would I want to delete sp.dll and a sp.reg, when reg is usually a registory. Thanks
ME

In Windows 98 go to Start Run and type MSCONFIG and then hit OK and look for the sp regedit -s C:\windows\sp.dll. Uncheck that box and see if that
fixes your problem.the sp.dll is making the call to sp.reg which was removed by AdAware or by McAfee
and is no longer valid.Removing the entry in the MSCONFIG or the registry key as described above will not harm your computer. The safest way is to use the MSCONFIG or a startup control program such as Mike Lin's StartUpCPL from http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml
Make sure that AdAware or McAfee are fully updated before running them as virus and spyware mutate and change frequently.

I'll add my thanks too. This sure beats trying to get an answer from a Microsoft site. They're USELESS!

Thank You!! Thank You!!! I had this Virus I ran a check and it said I had a sp.dll file. So I used y'alls Instructions and got rid of the Dang thing!!!
Thanks!!

Okay .... I had this virus too, only nothing about sp.reg.. only sp.dll... it deleted mine but I get the error when I start up ... the thing is .. I have no clue what y'all are talking about with regedit... heard it before but not sure what to do ... could anyone kinda walk me through what I gotta do? If so.. thank you much really appreciate it!
