Get error msg "Cannot finish defragmenting" DEFRAG001285. Tried other posts suggesting deleting APPLOG directory and running defrag from safe mode...got same error. Any ideas anyone ? I also ran scandisk both regular and thorough and it runs clean. PC Doctor disk check also runs clean. I ran out of ideas to try to get past this.

Try running Defrag and Scandisk with only "Explorer" and "Systry" running. Shut everything else down using the Ctrl-Alt-Del, Close Program route. Also shut down your screen saver and any firewall / virus protection software.

He said he tried in safe mode,so background apps should not be the problem. The link I gave him refers to that exact error message...but only refers to the deletion of the applog file, which he said he tried as well.hmmm...

Have a look at this one.It says it applies to 98,but could be the same with ME.I'm on my XP partition now,so I can't check for you first.

Try running disk cleanup,as well. And,have you done any partitioning lately?

Only other thing I can tell you is,to do a google search for the error message, under the "Web" tab and the "Groups" tab. There's plenty to read.

The 1285 error message is caused by not having enough free space on the disk that you are defragging.

You will need to delete some files first.

Start with the \windows\temp folder and empty the IE browser cache to start. Also, delete any files in the root directory of the disk of the format FILEnnnn.Chk.

You need a minimum of 15% of free HDD space available to do a defrag. Make sure you have at least that amount.

I have over 50% free space available...so that is not the cause

Run a scandisk with Autofix UNselected and see if any errors are detected.

Go in Bios and change your hard disc detection to AUTO
It has helped me several times. Good Luck.

another option is download diskeeper lite
it is the defrag program microsoft bought from executive software for xp, except this version defrags system files also.
http://www.executive.com/freeware/freeware.asp
this is the freeware version of diskeeper
so some of the features are disabled, but it still does a good job.
