I now realize that Windows ME is the worst OS in the world, but for now it is all I have. Can someone please tell me why (a) when defragmenting my hard drive it takes a very very long time and (b) why does it only reach 24%completion??? Please help me!

winme like any operating system is considered "the worst" when the user cant operate it properly.

Reasons for slow defragging:
1.Large hard disk.
2.Not defragged regularly.
3.Background tasks causing it to restart frequently.

Solution:
1.Partition the drive so that windows and software are on a smaller piece of the disk. 10GB is sufficient. Smaller size, quicker defrag.
2.Defrag once a week. Several light cleanings instead of one huge mess.
3. Ctrl/alt/dlt and kill everything but explorer before running defrag or run defrag from safemode.

James,
You can access it many ways. here are the two most popular.
1.open the case and grab it.
2.view it from explorer.

Derek
search in the field on top of the page for defrag problems, you'll have alot to read and perhaps you will learn some important info on running a clean efficient o/s(i did)
James
holding your wealth of information hostage is an unfair tactic on a forum dedicated to helping the less fortunate

don't have to partition, just ctrl-alt-del everything except sys tray and explorer & set it going- a 20gb hard drive should de-frag in less than 30 minutes

1st - Maybe Too Many Bad Cluster in HD....do scandisk / all

2nd - maybe total free space each partition below 20%...a very big slow down.....

or

3rd - maybe too many Lost Clusters - Selution, run scandisk...
