Comment:

When going to defrag puter the disk defragmenter seems to be missing. Not on the list of tools.

How can I restore the defragmenter. System Restore does not recover it. Used 3 different restore points and it is still not there.

Right-click your desktop. Then go New > Shortcut In the command line put;

C:\WINDOWS\DEFRAG.EXE

Click Next > (button) Type; Disk Defragmemter in the box. Click the Finish (button)

Now you have the shortcut back. Now to put it in the right folder ;-) By "Not on the list of tools", do you mean in your Start menu, "System Tools"?

If so, move your pointer over "System Tools". When it's highlighted, right-click it, and then click "Open". Now drag the shortcut you made, into this window, then close it. Open your start menu, and it should be back. Give it a try.

Good Luck,
CrazyOne

p.s. If, if you mean the actual defrag.exe, just say, and will help with that.

:-)

Or if you want. You could call it Disk Defragmenter, instead of Defragmemter Or anything/anyway you like.

I don't like proofreading, can you tell
;-)~

Apparently the actual defrag.exe is missing since that's what the pop-up said. LOL

Thank you, and yes, I would appreciate your continued help with this.

Browse to C:\Windows\Options\Install\Win_16.CAB folder and locate DEFRAG.exe file. Right click on it and select the EXTRACT option. Place it in the C:\Windows folder.

You can run it from the Start - RUN and enter DEFRAG.

Likewise - msconfig - 'Extract File'

I'm not insensitive, I just don't care.

unicornb2,

Apparently, you've had plenty of good advise, in my absence. Thanks jboy - JackG

Went from not in the tools list, to a pop-up, that said the defrag.exe is missing. Hmm, ok
;-)

Where's carnac, when you need him
;-)

Hope it all works out,
and you're welcome,

Thank you all!

It dawned on me, before going through the extraction to have her use the command (defrag.exe)in the 'run' window...I'm such a duh sometimes. It worked.

It's not as easy as having it on a menu list, but whoever said life was easy?

I never used Win ME. Went straight from 98 to XP. ME is a puzzling OS. It's like they took 98 and 2000 and rolled them into one weird OS.
