Hello:
Can someone tell me where to go so as i can defragment my hard drive.
What does defragment a hard drive mean?
I got a Smart failure warning and someone told me that a defragment may fix the problem.
Thanks to all of my friends
Linda

to go to defrag your hard drive to the following: click on "Start", then "Programs", then "Accessories", then "System Tools" and finally click on "Disk Defragmentor". Choose the thourough option...and click on Start to watch the magic happen. good luck and i hope defragmenting your hard drive helps

Linda, the thorough is for scandisk, which you should run before you defragment, or that's the way I've always done mine. First, you need to turn off your screen saver and any running programs. You can use ctrl.alt.del. and end task on everything but explorer and sytray. Then do a scandisk, I do thorough about once a month, do the standard most of the time. Then do defragment. YOu get to both of them through the start/programs/accessories/system tools. I also do disk cleanup as well when doing them. First, disk cleanup, then scan disk, then defragment. You should really do this about once a week. Hope this helps.

Linda, no one seems to have answered your question as to what is 'defrag' anyway?
Over time, portions of your files are saved all over your hard drive as opposed to being saved all together. Not really a problem, the drive can still locate the parts, just not necessarily the fastest way. It is MUCH faster and more efficient for the parts to be together, that way the drive can locate and retreive them easier/faster. Enter Defrag.
The process puts all the various parts of a file together on the drive which better organizes it, think of the process as cleaning up and organizing. IF IT HASN'T BEEN DONE LATELY, IT MAY TAKE A WHILE. Overnight isn't uncommon on neglected drives. HTH.
Ed in Texas. (I do mine weekly - in minutes)

After you have used scandisk and defragmenter, or even before if you have problems with them, you might be interested in this post(the first link is SMUOD’s nice-looking HMTL version with hyperlinks, the second is the forum post with additional comments and replies)

You can try PowerDefrag from www.e-technik.com which reproduces the conditions as with ScanDisk starting up after a bad shutdown or VoptXP from www.goldenbow.com (A very sophisticated system.) However the problem with both Defrag and ScanDisk has now been identified as those programs which still employ long filenames, and which cause defrag and scandisk to have to re-read the file allocation tables. Once all long filename programs are removed from the disk you can run the Microsoft Maintenace Wizard in normal mode whilst still on-line. The other reason for defrag and scandisk to fail is, if there are invalid entries in the registry and good registry and file maintenance is essential to keeping a computer running smoothly. To do this one can try either RegCleaner (freeware) or System Mechanic (currently on 30-day free evaluation from www.iolo.com.) I now find that the standard Microsoft Maintenance Manager is more than adequate and would advise users of 9x systems (95/'98/'98se) to use the DEFRAG.exe from Me in place of their old defrag.exe as it is much faster. Just re-name the old defrag.exe to defrag.old and put DEFRAG.exe from Me in the same folder. When you are sure it is working delete your old defrag.exe and keep a copy of the one from Me on a diskette for future use. ("You can amaze your friends", too.) ETech.
