I'm having trouble with defragmenting my C drive for Compaq.It freezes at 10% and the system locks up. I've ran it in safemode and am still having the same problem. Don't know how to go about fixing this.

Go to this site and download the defrag program. It should run defrag when replaced. Hope that helps. Kevin.

Agree with the Kid, and also run scandisk in safe mode first to check for disk problems.

At the 10% mark, defrag is using the info in the \Applog files to Rearrange your programs so that they start faster. The benefit of this is questionable. Try the following. Ensure that the Explorer option is set to show all files, then browse to \Windows\Applog and delete all files. Then, run msconfig, startup tab and UNselect Taskmon. Reboot Try defrag again.

sorry to add on my problem to this, but to whitphil, i have a large program (reason and recycle) on my comp and both have stopped working after i defrag my computer. if i remove their files from the applog, will defragmentation of my hard disk leave them alone? i already tried reformatting my hd to get these programs to work, and the problem kept occurring. now i'm thinking it is directly connected to my defragging, because the defrag program consistently stalls at 25%
