My computer wont let me defrag. An error message occurs saying that I need to run scan disk. I have done this many times and still when I try to defrag the same message pops up. I even tried to defrag in safe mode and I actually got to 86%, then it froze again! There is a loud noise while my computer freezes too. This freezing doesnt just occur during scan disk and defrag but also during just normal opening files. I am always having to turn my computer improperly. HELP ME OUT!

Sounds like you have a bad hard drive which needs to be replaced. You can try something like Norton 2001 or Fix-It 3 first but noises are bad bad bad!

try to enable smartdrive in cmos setup. boot with a 98 boot disk. chose start coputer without cd-rom support. A:>scandisk c: do the same with any other partitions on the hdd. you may have a hdd going bad or if lucky just lost clusters. after that try and borrow a norton utilities 2001 or norton system works 2001 cd. if auto insert notification is not enabled for your cd-rom drive, double click on the drive letter in explorer. double click "Ncdstart" choose "launch utilities from cd" then "norton disk doctor" good luck :-)

Try scanning and repairing the errors before. Then defrag. ALL in safe mode
