Hi

I've recently defragged my local drive from safe mode... and the next time I booted it up.. instead of supposedly running faster.. it started having frequent lock ups. For some odd reason, my burner lights up and always tries to access the drive.. even though there's no disc. It usually freezes for a few seconds.. then the burner starts.

I have no idea what the problem could be.. I've never had this problem before.. and now I'm thinking that defragging is a bad idea.

Thanks in advance!

Are you sure you're telling the whole story? A simple defragging should not affect your hardware

yep. that's what happened. before the defrag.. everything was alright. i thought defragging it would speed loading processes up a bit... especially since i haven't done a full one for a while.

and the last few boots.. there was a message displayed before the boot screen.. it was something about... "automatic settings adjusted for drives c, e , and f." -- never saw that one before.

c is my local drive, e is my cd reader, and f is my burner

my computer locks up as the desktop loads. and locks up more frequently if i listen to music or watch videos. (both are located on an external hard drive that i've just checked errors for and... nothing)

i'd hate to reformat.. but it's looking so good right now.. ><

umm.. edit! it locks up (and the drive still lights up after) on every other tasks beside music and videos.

Did you check the "rearrange programs so my programs start faster" that time you defragged? NEVER do this, I did it once and my computer has been slower even if I defraged it without that option the following time but it's tolerable for me and it's not as much as what you've described.

Faris,

That's too bad. Yes, a reformat would fix it. Be sure to PROPERLY backup all important data FIRST because it will all be lost. NEVER, EVER select that option in the future because it leads to big problems. I still haven't been able to reverse it's effects entirely.

Faris,
