Hi again,is it a common problem not being able to scandiskand defrag, and why does it happen?,anyway i remember reading a while back about a program that can stop everything running in the background,so you can scandisk and defrag etc,can you remember what it is,or do i need it?,cheers.

It is called Enditall ithttp://www.pcmedixwebs.com/enditall.htm
Since I scandisk,defrag every 20-30 days
I don't use it.I do the job manually.

There are many ways to get around this so we'll start with the easiest first. From the Desktop, press Ctrl+Alt+Delete to bring up the End Task box. Highlight and End Eask everything except Explorer, SysTray, & your graphic card (some say to turn this off too, but its not necessary to be off and the screen will look better). With only these 3 showing in the box, close the box. Make sure your screen saver is turned off. Now defrag. Since it failed at leats once already, expect the defrag to take a while and look like its stuck on 10%....don't worry...go away for a while and when you come back all will be OK

I never start in safe mode and never have a problem with ScanDisk or Defrag.
Things that might be running:
FastFind
AntiVirus
PCHealth
System RestoreRESOURCE: ScanDisk & Defrag/24474

NO NO NO....A problem with the defrag and scandisk only crops up when something is writing itself to the selected drive. You can still look at files and open them aslong as you dont edit them when the scandisk is running. The defragmenter is 90% dependant on the scandisk, if the scandisk finds errors or stops working then 9 / 10 times the defragmenter will too.
CTRL + ALT + DEL theres no need to do this unless there is a program / application that is edditing the hard drive, examples = NAV, direct cd, rundll should be shut down before scandisk is started because these three applications are edditing the hard drive more commonly than others.
Best bet is safemode, this way only the minimal applications are running.
good luckHalo fly High

Also any program that is writing to the registry will cause Scandisk or Defrag to restart. Windows writes to the registry when you do very common tasks (like click on a menu, view files, etc.) and may cause Scandisk or Defrag to restart.

Ivor,
You need to close most of the programs running in the backgrown and the best way to do this is to get *enditall 2* at google. Enditall 2 will close only the programs that are not needed and protect the ones that are needed. It will even let you close your screen saver and power management. First I close the programs in the system tray, the icons by the clock, then I use enditall 2,then do a disk clean, then scan disk and then defrag. On a 34 gb drive it only takes 15 or 20 min. if you do this about every 2 or 3 days.
I also have Norton but I don't use it, it has given me more problems than it has fixed.
I use AVG antivirus You can do a google search for this too. Both AVG and enditall 2
are freeware.
You can get PowerDefrag free at:
E-Technik Website Development. This will do the job fast and eazy.

I use SpeedDisk every few days; I have a 20GB hard drive with 4GB worth of files and it takes less than five minutes.

Just do it in safe mode...it's easier, more reliable, and slightly more thorough.
If your disk hasn't reached somewhere in the neighboorhood of 10% fragmentation or more,it's really not going to do you any good anyway.

See my post here in regard to the 10%http://www.computing.net/windowsme/wwwboard/forum/27365.html

Gotcha WhitPhil. My response there was to the original post, which as far as I could tell, was about a simple Windows Defrag. But,I see,and definitely accept/understand your point...lol...I am FULLY aware that your knowledge runs far deeper than my own,but since I never seem to have problems with a Windows Defrag,I always tend to lean in that direction when giving my "advice".
Some of what I say comes from experience, and some from a place that I know you visit as well. We'll leave it at that for now.But I ALWAYS take what you say and try to learn from it,so thank you,and wait for me to catch up,would 'ya?!!!
Thanx,WhitPhil....

Not a problem!
It very well could be on some configs that a 10% fragmented system shows no slowdowns. Especially a fast cpu/fast drive/multiple channels/lots of ram. The drive may be "working hard" when it is accessed, but due the speed of the system, it isn't noticeable.
Also note that if you are running Taskmon and running Defrag with Optimize programs selected, there is a good chance that the files being optimized are in fact fragmented. This is absolutely normal and part of the rationale in the optimization process.
