My computer can't do a disk defrag on the hard drive it starts then goes drive "contents changed restarting". It use 2 do this before I formatted bcoos I had a virus. But I do a virusscan with Mcafee and it don't find anything. Anyhelp would be great thanks.
Like the Kid said, you still have programs running in the background. here's how to shut them down. First: Select none for screensaver, Powersettings to "Always on" Second: "Ctrl+Alt+Del" press only once Twice will restart computer. "End Task" to everything except "Exeplorer" and "Systray" then Defrag. Same for Scandisk too some times.

You need to close most of the programs running in the backgrown and the best way to do this is to get *enditall 2* at google. Enditall 2 will close only the programs that are not needed and protect the ones that are needed. It will even let you close your screen saver and power management. First I close the programs in the system tray, the icons by the clock, then I use enditall 2,then do a disk clean, then scan disk and then defrag. On a 34 gb drive it only takes 15 or 20 min. if you do this about every 2 or 3 days. I also have Norton but I don't use it, it has given me more problems than it has fixed. I use AVG antivirus You can do a google search for this too. Both AVG and enditall 2 are freeware. thebest2uDon

OK first of all make sure you run a scan disk BEFORE you defrag. This could save you alot of headache. perform both of these operations in SAFE-MODE. Scandisk can be run from the WINME bootup disk

Paul, what MS has to say. What Jonas said about Scandisk first I agree with. *This issue can occur if a program (such as an antivirus program or a screen saver) is running on the drive when the Disk Defragmenter tool is running*

Paul, I've tried it both ways. Safe mode will do the job. You might also want to try using 'Power Defrag'. The proggie seems to be a lot faster.Get it free at http://www.powerdefrag.com. HTH. Ed in Texas.
