Hi folks

For the last 3 years my computer has run Defrag for me at 03:30 every Saturday morning. No probs.

This morning it was still running when I awoke at around 08:30 (day off for a change!)

Not only was it still running, it hadn't really got going at all. I put "Details" on and found it was only doing the "Checking for errors" bit which reset every time it got to 3%.

So I did a Scandisk - No errors.

Then did a restart but with that old StandBy the "Start Up Disk" in and started a full Scandisk with surface check (and then went down the Pub!! Well it is a bit like watching paint dry, isn't it?)

On return, I found no errors; apart from the 3 bad sectors that have been there since time immemorial.

Restarted in Safe Mode and tried Defrag again.

Same result.

With the time it takes to do a surface scan I'm sure you realize that I have spent most of the day on this but am no further forward.

Anyone out there with a suggestion as to my next move? (No! not that; I'm not suicidal yet).

Regards

Stuart

Did the problem also just appear out of the blue for you, or have you always had it?

Have you run scan disk while in the safe mode?

Stuart go to http://www.langa.com/newsletters/2003/2003-09-11.htm and scan down the page for the latest reader's suggestions and go to item 5. Use the link to get diskeeperlite. It is a more comprehensive program by the people that do the defrag program for Microsoft. It is a full and complete program, only thing missing is that you have to manually run it. You also do not have to worry about screensavers or other programs interrupting the defrag of your drive. HTH.

Hi Capt

Thank you so much for that link to DiskKeeperLite. It works a treat.

I hoped that after it had defragged my drive (three times actually to get it properly packed; that probably reflect the state it had got into!) the original MS Defrag would run.

No such luck; it still resets every time it gets to 3% of "Checking for errors".

So whilst I haven't actually resolved my problem, (I still won't be able to use the AutoRun early every Saturday morning) or found out what is causing it, you have given me an excellent "Work Around" which I recommend to BenTheGoodman

Thanks again for that.

Thanks Bob, but as per original post, it won't even run in Safe Mode.

I'm getting on fine with DiskKeeperLite. It's far more effective (on PC Pitstop report) and quicker than the MS defrag.

It also has a fast scan mode to let you see exactly how much fragmentation you have so you can decide when it is desirable to do a defrag run.

I'm a total convert! Even if I do get the MS version to work again I doubt I would ever use it.

Regards

Stuart
