A little more details next time, please. ctrl+alt+delete to see if there's anything running in the background? MSCONFIG to see if there's anything running you don't want? Have you tried defragging in safe mode yet? Try these things, then repost with a better setup of the problem if need be.

Look at this post, especially points 2,5,6,7,9,16 http://www.computing.net/windowsme/wwwboard/forum/18106.html Then try scandisk and defrag again.
A lot of the problems are caused by background programs, so you can also try running them in Dos as described here http://computing.net/windowsme/wwwboard/forum/13355.html response 3 If you don't know how to create a bootdisk or startup disk: 1. Open Add/Remove Programs properties in Control Panel. 2. Click the Startup Disk tab, and then click Create Disk. 3. Follow the instructions on the screen. You can also use a freeware program called End it All which you get here http://home.ptd.net/~don5408/toolbox/enditall/

Go to e-tecknik.com and download power defrag. It will allow you to defrag. It is free to use. Also you have the option to buy power defrag pro which will let you power scan and power fix your reg. Useing this program will work with your windows tools to improve its performance, and pevent any back ground programs from interrupting.

Sometimes when Defrag quits or acts up it is because the Applog file has become corrupted. (C:\Windows\Applog). You can generate a whole new Applog by doing the following :\ Find the Applog folder in C:\Windows and rename it as Applogold. Restart your computer. Go back into C:\Windows. You will now find a new Applog folder. Delete Applogold, making sure to remove it from the recycle bin afterward. Try to run Defrag again and if it now works then the Applog was the problem.
