I use maintenence wizard, trying to defrag. In safe mode: First I use scan disk, first on standard, says that I have errors that need to be fixed. then I run it on standard (with autofix checked)on thorough. Then I run defrag again, when it starts to defrag, I get a message that says my drive has errors on it and needs to be fixed first with scandisk. A vicous cycle. Any suggestions?

Have you run the disk clean up utility ,also I would disable any anti-virus you may have runing in the background and make sure the screensavers are set to none ! You may have already tried all of these methods to no avail ? I would think running the scan disk with it set to automaticially fix any error's would have taken care of the problem ? You may need to empty the Temporary folder manually and the Temporary Internet Files also !
Best Wishes

I have encountered the same problems when attempting to run Scandisk. It stops and restarts constantly without finishing. At some point it will even not try to run again reporting that it has stopped so many times the scan should be tried again later. My suggestion is to run it in SafeMode immediately after powering up your computer. This way there are fewer programs in operation. Also, the above suggestions are good also, that you should terminate all unnecessary programs, even sreensavers, power schemes etc. that might impact on the scan.

The way I got a good completed scandisk and defrag I did the following
1. Clean off you task bar. All the Icons next to the start button, drag them into the recycle bin. The icons next to the clock right click on them one at a time and close them.
2. Bring up the task manager (Ctrl-Alt-Delete) and close down all the listed programs except EXPLORER.
3. I did not have to run the defrag or scandisk in Safe-mode, and after you are finished restart the computer and all those icons will reappear. Richard

One other thing I did, I forgot to tell you is that I disconnected from the internet. That way you can shyt your firewall and virus checker down.

update, I tried your suggestion to no avail.
I have two drives and I just tried defragging on the "D" drive and it worked (I do it in safe mode) So at least I know it is not the defrg program that is the problem. I retried the "C" drive, using scan disk thourough (it said I had errors and fixed them)and then regular. When it was checking the drive in dfrag, it still said I had errors that needed to be fixed and to run scandisk.
anyone?
