Hi all,
Since the install of ME I have found that when I now defrag it goes on for hours and never gets past 54% before going back to start again (I defragged the other day for over 4hrs and never got past this stage) anyone have a solution to this? Thanks.
The following is taken from a PC World Magazine article, It should help you with your problem.
Scan the disk. If Defrag repeatedly dies on you, run ScanDisk: Select Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools, ScanDisk. Make sure the Thorough option is checked before you click Start. If ScanDisk can't finish its job either, exit Windows and try the DOS version: Select Start, Shut Down, Restart in MS-DOS mode. At the DOS prompt, type scandisk and press Enter.Close all your programs. You should have nothing else running when you perform a disk scan or defrag. After you exit from all your applications, press Control-Alt-Delete to bring up the Close Program window. Close every item listed--except Explorer and Systray--by highlighting each item and clicking End Task.
Turn off your screen saver. Right-click the desktop and select Properties. Click the Screen Saver tab. For your screen saver, select (None), then click OK.
Clear out your hard drive. The more space you leave, the easier it is for these utilities to do their work. Empty your browser's cache and history folders. Delete all the .tmp and .chk files you can find. (Not sure where they are? Run the Find utility from the Start menu.) Uninstall any program you never intend to use. Finally, when you've deleted all these superfluous files, don't forget to empty the Recycle Bin.

Cheers Richard,
I've done most of this apart from just selecting Explorer and Sys tray in the window so I'll give this a try and thanks in anticipation.

Agree with Richard. There are even more things that can interrupt a defrag and cause it to restart. Look at this post, points 2,5,7,9

Here's a great help file on defragging a hard drive www.boogiejack.com/computer018.html .
You will not have to download the defrag.zip file as you already have it.
Steve, ive discoverd that if i do defrag in safemode that it is much easier and faster.
Many thanks one and all, I tried Richards method before I had any other replies and I'm pleased to say it worked - cheers Richard - however, I will look at the other options, the safe mode intrigues me I'll proberly give that a try next time round, once again thanks for a great response.
