Hi, i have recently defragmented my computer using Norton system works. In the advanced i think there is an option called swap/paging which i checked and now when i restart computer i get the options screen. Thing is that when i select safe mode computer restarts back to the options screen. I think it is the swap file at the beginning of the drive that causes the problem. how can i get past it. Thank you for any sugestions.

Hmmm, what version of Norton? I use Speed Disk 2001 version (once a month or so) and let it put the "permanent" swapfile (512MB) at the beginning of the drive and it's never bothered a thing for the past five years.

I don't know what to suggest to help you though, sorry.

I was thinking more along the lines of starting the PC with the floopy, than doing a scanreg/restore, and choosing a back-up that pre-dates your problem.

wow Larry! I am very happy to here from u again. Thank you for following with all the responses pal and no i haven't been able to start in safe mode. When i try the computet will just restart. Do u know if defragmenting hdd from dos if possible would fix it or reinstalling windwos is the only way. If so what will happen when i do that will i loose all my settings, programs, drivers, and registry? I don't know if that helps but i moved the swp file to another directory and then copied another file about the same size to c then i moved swp back to c: but nothing new. Thank you again.

nitrolous,

Are you still out there, and do you still need help?? Hmm, looks like the other flew the c... :-) I'm in the works, of moving things. So, might be a long time between responses. If that's ok, give a shout and will give you a hand. Ok

Later,
CrazyOne

p.s. Please tell exactly what happened. When you used Edit ect. Also, what happened when you started the computer after, thanks.

CrazyOne, yes i still need help but since my computer is not working i have to got to a library to use internet so my responses can take a little while. ok so when i edited the system.ini file i
* changed
shell=explorer.exe to
shell=progman.exe
* save
* exit + restart computer without a floppy

When computer restarts sometimes it freezes other times i get the screen with normal boot, save mode. dos ... if i select normal, computer keeps loading than goes blank, if i go save mode it will restart back to the same screen. Thx again CraZyOne
