Default search engine

I've finally located the Registry key that makes IE5.5 use MSN as the search engine from the address bar. It's located at HKEY_USERS/default/software/Microsoft/Internet Explorer/URLSearchHooks. The problem is that to me, it's a jumble of numbers and letters. How, for instance could I get it to use Alta Vista instead?

Why are you playing around with registry keys? After you click on search, click on customize. From there you can pick whichever search engine you want as the default.

Well, to be honest, I was annoyed that you only have a choice of one search engine when you use "? whatever you're seaching for" from the address bar (not just clicking on the Search button). Every time I do try to use the address bar method, the MSN search page comes up as "not found"! Uless I am missing something obvious, you can't define your own. Tweakui doesn't even let you do that any more. It's a bit sad that Microsoft is reducing the comsumers choice in this way.

Why not just open the engine you want to use and add it to favourites? How hard can it be?

For years I've always used the address bar method of searching, and now I can't. It's annoying! Thanks for your replies though.

I know the feeling about the search defaults, I too found it annoying as they are not the ones I use by choice so I added Google to my Links folder (favourties) then added the "Links" to my toolbar now it's only a click away... perhaps you could do a similar thing with Alta Vista.
