I've been trying to figure out how to remove certain sections of the user.dat file, namely passwords and records of internet sites and files opened. If anyone has any idea how to modify the user.dat registry in Microsoft ME, I'd like to hear it. If anyone knew of a specific program that dealt with this problem, that would be preferable, since I'm not so great with computers. Thank you ahead of time.

Do not edit user.dat

If you only want to remove the internet web sites you have visited and/or cookies go to
Contol panel
click on "internet options"
in the "Temporary internet files" section
click on REMOVE FILES

What Passwords do you want to delete?

I know that you can delte history, and things like that, but there are url's on my user.dat dating back to over a year, when my brother got ahold of the computer and went straight for inappropriate websites.
I just noticed that a password I use for many things pops up several times in the user.dat file as well (sometimes preceded by "password", so I'd like to make it so others cannot see it.

Just a thought, try RUN ScanRegW /opt to optimize the Registry. Sometimes there are entries in the Registry that are not valid but show up and the /opt option can clean some of them out. Worth a quick try.

You may need to use a Registry Cleaner program like "RegCleaner".

Spider will show you where you (your brother) has been......

With Windows 98, Spider will allow you to delete this history. With Win ME (as I have) you can view the history only. To delete this history see delindex.......

You will need a start up (boot) disk. The good news is, these programs are free and most importantly.... they work !
