I have been having problems with this error too and have been unable to successfully track it down.

I suspect that it might be a DirectX problem because Ddhelp is a DX file and WinME uses a new version of DirectX(7.1)

Just out of curiousity, are you using a voice chat program called Roger Wilco with your games? This is what seems to cause all my errors. If I run this program by itself or with any game and then shut the program down, I will get the Ddhelp error if I try and relaunch any of my 3D games.

I got a similar error with my Athlon 850, Radeon 64MB ddr but I SOLVED THE BITCH!!! here is how... first I started the direct x version conflict manager, I deleted all my old direct x files. Next I installed the direct x files that came with my vid card, I then installed the VIA 4 in 1 driver that came with my mobo (VERY IMPORTANT) and I installed direct x 8 (downloadable from microsoft) now the error is gone, ALL OF THESE STEPS ARE NECESSARY. You can access the version conflict manager by going start, programs, accessories, system information. Then go tools, version conflict manager. It will tell you which direct x files are phucked, go start search and find and DELETE all of the phucked files, then continue.

THE SOLUTION
------------
Or, at least part of the solution. I followed what Fantom wrote above, and it does work! I had to use a boot disk and then manually delete the Direct X files by hand through DOS...my card now works without the DDHELP error. You don't need to delete all Direct X files, but I did. Windows replaced the DDHELP and a few other files.

My new problem is that I deleted the DDRAW.VXD file, and my card needs that for the 3D acceleration. Now it is more of a lame duck than anything else. If I re-insert the VXD file, I will then get the DDHELP error yet again. I think I am getting close to making it work- it's just a matter of finding the right combination of Direct X components. E-mail me if you have a solution to this!

Along with the rest of you, I too have been struggling through numerous hours of re-installing Windows ME time after time. I have the ATI Radeon 64mb DDR Vivo, I am using an MSI motherboard with an 866 P3 processor, and I have the VIA chipset on the motherboard. I have installed Direct X 8.0 along with the ATI drivers, and still no solution. I have installed the VIA chipset drivers along with the ATI drivers, and now windows doesnt load, the freakin screen just goes blank right before it loads. Can anyone, shed any light on this issue!?!?!

Brand new freshly built computer. WinME, Radion 64mb. 800p3. I get this damn Ddhelp error on almost everything. I get it trying to run Half life, I get it on certain web pages. I got it trying to load the System Information like Fantom advised. I downloaded the latest drivers from ATI. Nope. I got the DirectX8. Nope.

Now I'm trying something else. I'm reinstalling windows, except this time with Win2000. I'll let you know how it works.

Okay, loaded Windows 2000, and now it works great!

So that's my advice, dump WinME and go with 2000.

It appears that I'm not alone in the ddhelp issue. Misery loves company....well, my problem comes when I try to open up Macromedia's 'Flash.' After deleting my old version of direct x and ddhelp, I installed the newest version of direct x--no change, same error message. I did find a temporary solution, however. Rather than choosing close at the error message, I just click ignore several times and then flash starts up fine. I'd like to find a more permanent solution, however.....

this problem is related to motherboard chipset/drivers and RADEON. okay, so that's it. i can accept that. i will find the right set of drivers and work on the problem until it is solved or the motherboard dies. that is my responsiblity, BUT ATI knows the about problem. a web search of ddhelp and radeon will take you to the ati support page: radeon_issues.html -- but Sorry... You are trying to reach a page that does not exist! ATI has decided not to support consumers, appearently chosing to hide this mess in the bit bucket. It is my duty to alert future buyers of ATI's non-support policy and i accept. if you are reading this and have not bought Radeon... DON'T!
[i am a reasonably intelligent geek who can solve problems -- and i'm not mad... yet!)

Radeon + Athlon = disaster. My Radeon was working like a champ with Windows ME and a PII 450. But once I installed the KT7 mobo and 1ghz Athlon, everything that you all are describing happened.

Just found an updated driver on ATI's website that is supposed to address this issue. Go to support, type in "ddhelp" in the search and download the driver that's supposed to fix the Via chipset/Athlon/Radeon problem. I hope this works.

I have 5 gaming systems. All have a Nvidia cards of some sort TnT2s and Geforce cards. I have celerons P3s and Athlon K7s. Every single one of them has this DAMN error which force reboot. It is a OS issue. I have been building systems since WIN95. This is the only problem I have not been able to solve thus far. I first started seeing this error shortly after the DX update released right before WINME was on the shelves. I think it was DX 7a or something. I do know of a way to lessen the error dramatically. First reboot your computer in safemode. Now go to device manger and remove ALL the display adapters that show up. Reboot again and when windows detects your card do not let it install a driver for the card. Choose display a list and then choose standard VGA adapter and reboot. Now you can update the driver to the driver of your choice. Every time you update the driver for you cards do this. On some of my systems this eliminates the Ddhelp error completely. On others it just lessens it to a point that it will only occur every few days or so.
