Comment:

Running a system check my software flagged files msqsrv32.exe & mprext.exe in red as 'dangerous'. I know these are Windows system files used by a number of programmes so am reluctant to mess with either of them. Would someone explain what the files do and why they are regarded as dangerous ? Thanks

Keith

Hi! SlowRambler, did it show "msqsrv32.exe" instead of "msgsrv32.exe" (q replaced by g) and "mprext.exe" instead of "mprexe.exe" (t replaced by e)?

If it did show "msqsrv32.exe" and "mprext.exe" then those files may be malicious.

The following links give simple information about the files "msgsrv32.exe" and "mprexe.exe"

Thanks for the response and useful links 'finitestateautomaton'

If I could impose more on your goodwill and ask a further couple of questions

I'm afraid I do have msqsrv32.exe (q rather than g) My software states File is component of LIMUS virus.I have 15 dependencies on this system file.

My mprexe.exe is missing the 't' but software advises File is component of OPASERV.T virus. I have 25 dependencies on this file and perhaps even worse my software advises the file 'Is not the valid Microsoft system file'

What do you think and/or advise ?

Anyone else in the group come across this problem ?

Keith

Hi! SlowRambler, I am not an expert in this field (ie viruses, trojans etc) but I will help you as far as I can :). I have two questions 1)What kind of software found out those files is it an antivirus software or an antispyware software (please specify name) and 2)Didnt that software give you some options about handling those infected files?

Thanks.I use 'System Mechanic' (Version 6) by Iolo Technologies. Amongst other tools there is a process manager which lets me check the status and safety of all my running programmes. They are marked as either safe or dangerous.I have the option of stopping the programme or asking 'google' for information on the programme. If I hit the google button up come various web pages detailing what is known.I dare not use the 'stop' option when I have so many dependencies on the programmes. No obvious ill effects of the dangerous programmes identified and my regular anti virus sweeps (using McAfee) pick them up.Tempted to retreat behind the thought 'if it aint broke dont fix it' but something is wrong and I am worried.Any thoughts ?

You should post this question and a link back to this thread in the security section of these forums for more and better help.

I have never used Iolo software, but I think the dependencies you see listed there may very well be virus processes. I'm also not very fond of McAfee or some of the other big name av software brands.

I would recommend that you do some online malware scans at reputable sites:

NOD32 Signature Search Engine | Online scanners and tools

Most security forums have preliminary steps they want you to follow to minimize infection before requesting you to post a hijackthis log file, so wait till an expert at reading hijackthis logs requests you to post one before doing so.
