Were you trying to install Direct X from the MS website or from a CD? If from the website, try disabling your firewall and anti-virus software and anything else running in the background and then try the installation again. Also read this knowledge base article.

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q281967

If you were installing from a CD try searching the CD for the file and putting it in your system folder.

I just downloaded the bought version of everquest trilogy onto my computer. When i finished downloading, i reran everquest.exe and it said a d3d8.dll file was not found. I logged on to morpheus, downloaded the file, and it found it, only to tell me that a d3d8thk.dll file was missing. I can't find this one on morpheus and have no clue what the problem is, can you help?

I have tried installing directx 8.0 and the latest 8.1 but nothing works. It still says d3d8.dll is missing. The file is there in the windows system folder. Is it that there is a file which says what *.dll files are on the machine which has not got the d3d8 registered in it so the game thinks it's not there?
