In Control Panel - Display Properties - Background, a window appears which lists all the files that can be selected for screen background on the desktop.
How can I remove files from this window which I don't want to use anymore as possible backgrounds?

The pictures you've grabbed and saved as desktop wallpaper over the years, live in "My Pictures" in "My Documents" Access them through Windows Explorer and delete the pictures you've put there.

The pictures that are native to Windows ME are automatically put there for you on install and are accessed, added or deleted through Add and Remove programs >> Windows Setup under Desktop Themes. No real need to remove those pictures as there are only a few, admittedly a bit lame, but few.

Thanks for your answer. If I understand you right, if I want to delete a picture shown in the desktop wallpaper list but not in the My Pictures folder, I would have to save it in another folder, then delete it from the My Pictures folder, which takes it off the Desktop Wallpaper list; then I can put it back into the My Pictures folder.

Any picture in "My Pictures" will show up in "Control Panel >> Display Properties >> Background, a window appears which lists all the files that can be selected for screen background on the desktop."

The pictures at the two locations should be the same, so just go to "My Pictures" and delete the pictures you don't want.

.....then that "list of files that can be selected for screen background on the desktop" will reduce accordingly. :)

When you first install Windows ME (or purchased the machine), Microsoft kindly puts some pretty pictures (vinca.jpg, yosemite.jpg, sample.jpg etc etc) for you in "My Pictures" (which are listed at the other location too). These pictures are accessed installed / uninstalled through Add and Remove programs >> Windows Setup under Desktop Themes.

Sorry, I just had chance to read through your response properly, and yes you're correct.

Example. If I have ME set up on a partition for any length of time I usually have an image folder with categories of images set up. I usually pluck a couple of pictures out of there and copy them into "My Pictures" and use them for desktop eye candy.
