What a weird thing this is. Hopefully this problem is specific enough where it will be obvious to someone out there precisely what is wrong... if possible, please respond by email - I am unable to frequently consult the site here... I thankyou all for such a great and helpful forum!

I installed a TDK CD-RW drive, making it the master and my existing drive the slave. I made absolutely certain that everything was correct in the installation process... Starting up the computer, I experienced major freezing up problems with Windows ME, something I could solve (temporarily) only by disengaging the ndis.vxd. However, this rendered my cable modem unsuable, as it removed the ability to connect to the network on my computer.

An AT&T cable service expert was consulted, who suggested I re-install the modem drivers. This seemed to work at first, however, now I have other crazy problems:

First of all, upon normal startup, the system does not recognize the network. However, if I reboot through the Home Networking setup feature, it works upon reboot. When I do this, I often get an AutoUpdate error. Usually, it is only once I've gotten the AutoUpdate error message that the network is suddenly recognized by Windows ME. Very weird.

Another major problem is that when I try to play any audio or video media coming in from the web, even like someone's website music theme or anything - no matter how simple or innocent - it crashes the computer. Even playing media that is alreadyon my hard drive like saved mp3s will also often crash the computer.

Sorry for the totally scattershot question/issue, but this is too bizarre for me to sum up concisely.

I hope some can help!!

Best wishes,

Mark T

Try to replace your ide drives connections.
Put the Harddisk with your OS as primary master, your cd-rom drive as primary slave if there's any. Your cd-rw would be the secondary master. Start from this troubleshooting procedure first..Goodluck!
