Sometime ago, after reformatting and reinstalling ME, I still had problems with ME seeming to get clogged up and stalling. I run a lean system, have disabled everything I dont need. Have done reformats a few times but this is new.

When I have run apps or run tasks, at some point it acts like its out of memory. I always have to reboot, I cannot just end tasks. Have looked at everything and tried many suggestions, to no avail.

Also, have noticed something which probably is not related. By the way, no spyware, I run all the scans at least weekly. When I view a web page that has bulleted lists, the bullets appear as foreign charaters. Encoing is Western Europe ISO. Any ideas that could help me here? Thanks.

After you did this formatting & reinstall, did you run Windows Update & install all the critcal updates, bug fixes, IE6 SP1, Media Player 9, etc?

You might wanna have a look at this:

Jam, yeah, I've done all that, the usual things one does. Except WMP 9 which is why I had to do all that fun stuff in the first place. At this point I am at a dead end.

RobertEL,

So, you've done a complete, fresh install. Installed all the {updated}drivers, for your motherboard, video, sound, modem, ect. Then installed the updates, for the OS, and also any updates for the browser. {as you deemed fit} Then installed any updates, for programs you're running.

Am I right? yes/no?

"When I have run apps or run tasks, at some point it acts like its out of memory."

Could you break that down/explain, please. Thanks

Try "Unicode (UTF-8)", and see what the results are, ok.

Also, after restart, what is your System Resources __% free? And when you say, "it acts like it's out of memory", what is the resource level then. Thanks

How much RAM, are you using?(MB) If it's not a HUGE list, could you give your list of things, in your startup. Thanks

I've never had any probs with WMD 9 on any 98 or ME systems I've installed it on...what was the problem?

Let me reply to Jam first...

When I upgraded to WMP 9 from v7, it seemed to work. Then I began to rip music CDs using another app, and found I was having to reboot to get things working again. The system would just hang and I would need a reboot. No errors, it would just freeze. Same symptoms now after the reformat.

I bring up the task manager which takes a few seconds. At this point, nothing is running that should present a problem, its pretty much the same setup as before, just gone back to WMP 7. Even if I close any running apps, its shot, have to reboot anyway.

Am maxxed out at 384megs. At the moment, 54% resources free. At bootup, its about 75-80%. Thanks guys, will psot more info when I can.

If you formatted & reinstalled ME, & are still have the same probs, the original problem probably wasn't caused by WMP 9.

How about some system specs? Saying AMD doesn't give us much to go on. K6-2? Duron? Athlon? Athlon XP? Have you checked that you're not overheating?

Maxxing out at 384mb doesn't sound correct...unless you're not referring to the board's max & are referring to having all slots filled. Have you tested the RAM? Try running memtest86 & check for errors.

Ok, am back. First the easy stuff. UTF-8 does not change the probelm.

AMD K6-2 w 384megs RAM, this is the max the mobo can hold. Settings in Windows are basically default.

After last reformat, updated everything. WinME, IE/OE.

At bootup, with 2-3 apps I normally load at startup, resoruces are at 79%

Disabled items...
StateMgr
TaskMon
Load Power Profile
LoadQM
SchedulingAgent
PCHealth

Loaded at startup...
ScanReg
SysTray
StillImage

And a few other things which I have always run with no problems.

Back to WMP 9. I know its gone now but the problem started at the time I upgraded to 9.

Ran memtest86, no errors. Think I could use a new computer, be nice.

Update.... I am at the moment at 46% resources free, this is with apps I normally use all the time. No problems. Earlier, I had the issue come up, and tried closing apps down. This time I was able to check resources and it was 68% but I still had to reboot because the system was screwed up. So I am quite at a loss.

Wondering if resetting BIOS might help, perhaps a setting got changed inadvertantly.
