Ever since we got our computer (433 celeron 512mb ram) the kernel processor usage always stays at 100%. No matter what is open it stays there. It doesn't seem to run slow, but i wouldn't know since it never goes down. Could the system monitor be detecting it wrong? Is there another program that could check this out? Thanks.

In my PC sysmon is reporting bad !!!
Use WINTOP from above adress (freeware)
to see details about running processes.
(It's a Microsoft's program).
Very good is shareware Taskinfo (30 days
free).

If the usage drop when you move the mouse, then that is a known problem with Windows Q227131 that they have never fixed. If you are running two or more programs that monitor kernel usage, then it will read 100% also. Q178563

To Find out about Your System’s Available Memory/resources:

Start/Run/MSConfig/Help/About
Control Panel/System/Performance
Start/Run/Programs/Accessories/System Tools/Resource Meter
Start/Run/Msinfo32

Karen's Computer Profiler is also nice (and comprehensive). Get it here.

Do NOT use Norton’s System Doctor (it sucks up the very resources it’s supposed to measure, and processor usage will always be screaming at or near 100%.)

Well I downloaded that wintop and it says the process that is running constantly is DNETC.exe from windows/system. I guess I don't really know what this is. Is it supposed to be running always? It seems to use up as many computing cycles as it can. Is this a problem?

By the way I have 512mb of ram, so I'm not thinking that should be a problem. Thanks.

Thank you very much for your helpful link. I got rid of the files and now my processor is happily idleing away. I think I have had that virus for like 2 years and McAffee has never found it. Thanks for your help.
