Windows Me; 8x/4x/32x CD-RW
I am obviously computer-challenged. I have copied files to the CD, after much headache. When I read them into the hard drive, they seem to then be read-only files. I have tried to change the attribute, without success. I cannot update the CD files because the system tells me they are read only. The CD seems to work okay on my new laptop using Windows XP Home.

Any file from a CD will be read only. If you are using a CDRW you will need to have appropriate software, and not finalize the disc.

In windows ME you have to use a program for everything, you can't copy, cut or paste to a cd - you may be able to do it by not finalizing the disc, I'm not sure.

But, if you are using a regular cd trying to do it like you can in XP, you will be able to do it only a certain number of times, because from what I understand, it rewrites the FAT for each new entry. So you could end up using up the disc without filling it up.

If you have the appropriate software (such as InCD from Nero) then you can copy/paste onto a CD-RW using any old operating system.

Yes, there is an overhead each time you write to a CD-R and deleting stuff doesn't free any space on the CD.

What does it mean to "finalize" a disk?

I downloaded InCD from Nero, but when I try to run it I get a message advising me that Roxio - Direct CD was found and that I need to uninstall it before running InCD. I can not find anything by that name. I do find something called Adaptec Easy CD Creator 4. Now what?

Finalize (or Close Session) applies to CD-R's.
You can keep adding to the CD but it many devices will not be able to read it until it is Finalized. It is then not possible to add any more to the CD.

I think (which means I'm not certain) that Easy CD creator is part of Windows Media Player but I know little about it.

Is Roxio in Control Panel/Add-Remove Programs?
If not it might be that a driver has been left behind from some previous install. This happened to me and eventually I found the file in c:\windows\system\iosubsys

Needs a bit of detective work (right clicking files and looking in Properties). It is important not to delete the wrong file.

See what others think also.

Adeptec Easy CD Creator and Roxio are the same program...just later versions (starting with 5 I believe) were distributed by Roxio.

Life is more painless for those who are brainless.
