Fellow Members -

Here is the newest development

after I finally identified the culprit for my earlier troubles as RealPlayer, I uninstalled it and removed it entirely from the System files (BTW and strangely enough, the RealPlayer icon still shows in the Control Panel).

Now I have access to Control Panel, but can no longer open the Windows Setup Menu within the Add/Remove; here I get the following message:

"Rundll32 has caused an error in Setupx.dll"

Replacing all this files with untarnished ones does not help, nor dooes MS Support's idea of putting the driver into system.ini.

Any bright ideas?

Try system restore. If that doesn't help, try reinstalling Me over itself.

I had exactly the same problem. Plus some other weird messages. Actually called Microsoft who didn't know what it was. Reinstalled Win Me, seemed alright after. Then on reboot - went into Safe Mode and gave a message that there was a mismatched setupx.dll. Re-re-installed and, touvh wood, everything seems OK.

Real Player 7 not 8 works correctly in ME yet 7 has spy ware! To get rid of Real Player in control pannel after uninstalling it should be simple! Find the file "prefcpl" in the C:\WINDOWS|SYSTEM....folder and delete it! Good bye RP Prefrance pannel!

Very true about prefcpl - had overlooked that.

In terms of setupx.dll - so the consensus is that only a Reinstall will take care of the problem?
