Whenever I load the computer, whenever I right click anywhere or nearly always, when I start a program the internet dial up box appears! My computer is also prone to freezing. I have up to date antivirus software, an up to date firewall and spyware and adaware protection. Any idea what's wrong?

You may want to see if the software provided by whatevver internet service you are using has an option for it to load automatically, and then make sure that option is not enabled ? I would also recomend that you install more RAM on your PC. 64M.B.'s is not enough RAM for a system running WinMe ,I have a 700MHZ P3 w/ 256M.B.SDRAM ! When I purchased the PC ,it came with 128M.B.RAM, I installed another 128M.B. RAM stick ,its a very easy upgrade ,and your system will reconize it when you bootup !
Good Luck Nick

Forgot something else that will help your system run much better. Its a good bet you have to many apps loading at startup ,you need to learn how to use the System Cinfiguation Utility run type> MSCONFIG, look at startup tab for how many apps have a check mark ton load at startup .Also go to this link on Trev's How to Make Windows Me run well ver5 >http://www.burzurq.com/forum/trevtweak.html

Take Care Nick

I had a look at the dial up settings and I changed one of the settings and the box doesn't seem to appear anymore! I feel like a fool - I should of found this out ages a go!!! As for the freezing, I'm going to have a look at your website, and I know I haven't really got enough RAM, but the problem is (and the reason I haven't upgraded,) is that you can't fit standard RAM sticks in my system - you've got to get specific ones from Gateway - and these are very expensive compared to normal sticks! As for MSCONFIG, I know about it, but I just don't know what I can disable! I'm sure I'm running plenty of pointless apps, but I don't really know which ones to stop. Are there any which run as standard in ME which can be disabled? If this is on your website I'm sorry - I'm going there now! Thanks, Peter

Don't be too sure that you must fit Gateway RAM - it's worth checking to see what motherboard you actually have & then check the manufacturer's web-site - chances are it will take standard RAM, you just have to be sure of the type.

Thanks everyone! You're all really helpful and I feel should now be able to significantly speed up my system and hopefully stop the freezing. I've printed off the relevant information from the websites and I'm going to check about the RAM. Thanks! I'll know where to come if I have any problems and can't stop the freezing, but hopefully I should be able to now!
