Ok this is the deal. I have a HP Pavilion 1GIG Athy, 256 meg RAM, 60gig HD (30.3 free), using IE and running with a 56k modem. I have an intermitant problem whereas I can connect to the ISP almost everytime, but 70% of the time I have no Through-put. I cannot access any web pages nor can I view my e-mail. Eventually, if I have the patience, I will connect and have great through-put. Now what I have done to try to fix is the following.
1. Checked my phone connection for static (it's clean)
2. Removed my TCP/IP for the Dialup adapter in Network, and then reinstalled.
3. Removed current .DUN and created a new one with all of the settings made.
4. Uninstalled old Modem (whereas I have removed it from the Device manager, removed the card, started it back up with out the card.
5. Installed an external USR modem.

Interesting tid-bits.
1. I used to have Morpheus installed on the computer. I have since uninstalled it, but I noticed that Kazaa was starting up in the background even after I uninstalled. I just recently noticed that there was another instance of Kazaa magically back in MSCONFIG's startup.
2. Every now and again when I disconnect from the internet, the modem will dial back up and connect. Usually when this happens I go to IE and have Throughput. But I look in the Task manager and I see nothing out of the ordinary running that would cause the redial.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

ThanxInAdvance,

-me-

HI JfrOg,

I can't help you with your connection problems, sorry. But may i remind you that both Morpheus and Kaazaa are very wellkown for the spyware they install on your computer. It just might be that even though you have removed them, the spyware is still there. I bet others here will help you out.

If you have unchecked Kazaa in msconfig and it keeps coming back...

Check start>>programs>>Startup for any instance of it and delete.

It sounds like spyware is crashing you JFrog. Especially with that " I disconnect from the internet, the modem will dial back up and connect". Have you run AdAware lately?

It's probably something that is hanging on to the Winsock keys in the registry.

Do a test.

Next time you "have no Through-put":

Stay connected.
Go to start>>run>>command
ping 209.90.0.4
Do you get replies?

How about:
ping sky.net
?

If you get replies on the IP, but not the FQDN... it's something hanging on to the winsocks. Run AdAware.

If you're still having the problem after running AdAware, post back for instructions on rebuilding the winsock keys in the registry.

If you do not get any replies from either... uninstall your firewall and try again.

A warning here... if you have Zone Alarm... to uninstall Zone Alarm:
Boot into safe mode.
Go to start>>programs>>Zone Alarm>>uninstall.

It hates having it's uninstaller run from add/remove programs... and if you are not in safe mode, it will not remove most of the files.

Been trying to get a hold of someone at Zone Labs to discuss their uninstaller. It sucks.

I am not currently at my home computer, I would like to get those instructions just in case so I can take care of them when I do get home.

Any more suggestions from anyone out there, I am pretty willing to try almost anything.

ThanksInAdvance,

-me-

Sure hon.

Go to start>>settings>>control panel.
Double click on add/remove programs.
Go to the Windows setup tab.
Double click Communications.
Uncheck Dial Up Networking.
Click ok>>apply.

It will ask you to reboot.
DO NOT REBOOT.

Go to start>>run>>regedit.
Back it up using registry>>export registry file.
Then delete the following keys:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\VXD\AFVXD

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\VXD\DHCP

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\VXD\MSTCP

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\VXD\Winsock

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\VXD\Winsock2

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Winsock

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\WinSock2

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\RemoteAccess
\Authentication\SMM_Files

Once you are finished, close the registry editor.

Go back to add/remove programs>>windows setup in the control panel.
Double click Communications.
Check Dial Up Networking.
Click ok>>apply>>ok.

When prompted...
This time...
REBOOT.

Those keys you deleted will be recreated when you reinstall DUN. If nothing is actively corrupting the Winsock files, you should be ok.

Only do this if you get an IP response, but not an FQDN. Otherwise you will just being wasting time.

Good Luck!

it may not be of much help in resolving your current sit, newgrl and others with more expertise than i are much more able to provide specific advice.
however some info may be had at these:
http://www.cexx.org/cydoor.htm
http://www.gibboncore.demon.co.uk/kazaaspyware/kazaaspywarehell.htm
it may give some insight on the "why"
it may be one of these ET plugins calling home.

by the way, the same folks who brought us the demons of kazaa are responsible for the supposedly "spyware free" morpheus.
a company called FastTrack.
seeing is believing:
http://www.fasttrack.nu/index_int.html
they wouldn't use any of the same fun and games would they?

I ran accross a great little program made by a guy called Mike Lin, called Startup Monitor. It monitors any attempts to enable something in the MSconfig\Startup and gives an alert. You then must choose to allow the change or not. Great for stopping MSMGR from loading everytime it is started. Uses very very litle resources, and is great. Can be found at www.mlin.net. check it out.
