I have an Emachines Emonster 1000B. The other day it was running then the power went out for a few hours. Now it wont start up. When I plug it in, the hard rive light comes on for a second, and the cd-rom drive light blinks a couple of times. I can hear the fan woking, but thats it. Whem i push the power button nothing happens. In the manual, it says to fix this just unplug the power cord for 10 seconds to completly discharge the computer, then plug it back on and it will work. Well, I have tried this, but to no avail. Can it possibly take longer to discharge the system, or is there another problem??? Can someone please help???

WHen the power came back on, I bet your system was still on. If your running an ATX power supply, then your computer would be off when the power came on. But an AT power supply with the power switch on could shorten or burn out when the power comes back on. I build my computers, not buy them premade so I can't tell you what supply you are using. ANYWAYS, if you have a voltimeter, I would check the vottage of your Power Supplies connectors. Odds are if I am right, you will need another power supply or in worst case situation, replace your motherboard in case of it being fried.
What happened is when power is shut off, when its turned back on, it sends out a huge jolt, just enough to fry your stuff.
So, when the power goes off, disconnect your surge protector (if your not using one, USE ONE.) from the wall until it comes back on.

hello
try these things befor replaceing power supply or mother board.
try clearing bios memory by shorting the jumper for 5-10 secondes than try rebooting. if that dont work try the things in this link.
m.e wont start
http://computing.net/windowsme/wwwboard/forum/30687.htmlif these things dont work than try the hardware as sujested above.

Yep...it was the power supply, and a fried modem, and a fried motherboard. Ouch. Thank goodness I bought the service plan from Best Buy. It's not gonna cost me a thing. Also, isn't a surge protector supposed to prevent this from happening???
