After installing high speed aol cable and norton personal firewall 2002, my computer wont shut down through start menu-shutdown. My os is windows me. It starts to shut down and the screen goes black, then just sits there. A tech from the cable company removed the lan card and installed a usb network interface. This solved the problem while he was here, but only that one time.It now refuses to shut down again. The cable modem is a toshiba pcx1100, with no on-off button. Please help as hours on the phone with tech have gotten me noplace.

i have no idea...
Before choosing shutdown you might try ctrl/alt/dlt to see whats running. Maybe one of the programs are still running and wont allow shutdown?

All I can say is that I too have WinMe and Norton Internet Security 2001. I also have the same problem. Normally I have to shut the power off at the power surger. Pressing Ctrl+Alt+Del will not function at this point.
-confused:(

Hi! J.c.d. !
Have you tried shutting down your computer with no programs running.I mean, when you have your computer on knock out all programs running, restart your computer, let it settle down, then do a shut down.--With one box unchecked you can start windows without NO programs running.------Donald
P.S.: just thinking of ideas

Hi - I had the same problem. It turns out that my ethernet card was conflicting with the network adapter that was built into my Intel P4 motherboard. I wasn't able to shut down. I removed my Earthlink ethernet card and used the built in Intel jack.
You may also want to check your antivirus software is not conflicting either.
Hope this helps.

To: Shutmeupordown: Thanks for the idea,I ended up being able to shut down by closing all open programs in the taskbar, then pressing ctrl, alt, delte, clicking on explorer and choosing end task. the shutdown screen pops up. click shutdown, and ta-da it shuts down. :)
