I have a hp computer running windows me. It has an amd 1ghz chip with a quantum 60gb hard drive. Every time i restart the computer it shuts down while the windows me screen is showing during boot up. It starts fine in safe mode, but it will only restart in normal mode if i use the restore disk to restore the original state of the computer. After restoring, it still crashes on startup.

When did this begin? Im not a tech but if it were me i would think back to the hardware/peripheral i installed last and disconnect it and see if thats whats causing it.

Dan, i dont have a clue. If you downloaded, installed something or changed a setting just before it happened it would be easier to locate the problem. If the PC just crashed for no reason and no wont startup even after a format/reinstall i cant be of much help. Stick around for someone with experience.
Good Luck.

Dan,
Try start --> Run --> msconfig and see under the startup tab. Deselect anything but systray and explorer, thats all you'll need for windows to run.
See if that helps and post back.

ps You can get to msconfig in safe mode also.

I tried that but it still wont restart in normal mode. I'm thinking that it might have something to do with the graphics? Anyone know for sure?

I am not sure what you want to do. . .you seem pretty smart, so now your options are opened from trying an asortment of things.
1) Reinstall graphics card driver
2) Reinstall windows
3) Try a different graphics card
4) Make sure there are no conflicting devices
5) Format and reinstallThat is just to name a few. Your options are pretty much open to anything.
Sorry if this was not much help, but you have tried the basics, so it might get a little bit more difficult from here.

[i noticed you got a huge harddrive as compared to mine which is 8GB. that set me thinking probably there is a virus lurking in your hard drive]
in safe mode do all these:
virus scan
diskclean
scandisk
scanreg
regcleanif you got Eraser tool run it thru the unused portion of the hard drive. I dont know the explanation behind this but when I did it I freed about 200mb space and the performance improved noticeably.
finally do a defrag and restart.

hello
you might have a virus in master boot record
to get rid of it use boot disk reboot at the a:\ type fdisk /mbr reboot
windoz will auto replace mbr
have a nice day

I think i found out the problem. It was my hard drive. I booted off of a boot disk, and ran scan disk. It found a ton of bad sectors and marked them. Now my computer boots up. I just have to buy a new hard drive. Thanks for all of the help.
