Ok, let me just explain my system first:
Intel Celeron 700MHz
Came with 64 Mb DIMM SDRAM
2 RAM slots

I recently bought a Kingston ValueRam 256Mb DIMM SDRAM P133. When I first put it in with the 64 stick the computer did not recognize it, but booted up properly. I tried using just the the 256 stick(my comp. would not boot), switching the 64 and 256(wouldn't boot again). The only way my comp. will boot is if the 64 stick is in. I need to get the computer to recognize the RAM. ANy help would be great.

Are you sure you have the right RAM? What os are you running on? Which slot do you put the stick of RAM in? Is it a prebuilt system (compaq?)?

I think the computer wouldn't recognize it becuase your computer is old. It probably only recognizes p100. P133 is a new kind, and the one that I bought is also compatible with p100, so it worked for me.

What motherboard do you have? The motherboard may not support 256 MB chips. It may only support 128 MB chips. If that is the case you should return the 256 MB and get 2 128's. Post back with what motherboard you have and we can try to look it up for you. If you are not sure what motherboard you have, tell us what model the computer is if it is made by someone like HP, Compaq, eMachines, etc... We can try to look it up from that.

Hope this helps.
Wolfgang

My computer is a 6 month old Micron. The only thing that I have found that works is keeping the original 64 stick in slot 1. Anything else and my computer doesn't boot.
My manual says it can hold 64, 128 or 256, in any order. When I try to put the 256 card in slot 1 the computer doesn't boot, and when I try to put the 64 stick in slot 2 the computer doesn't boot. AAAAHH this is pissing me off.

i went thru this same exact problem with my Emachines 700mhz. I found out from emachines that my motherboard supports a max of 256mb & it also cannot be 1 stick of 256 but must be 2 sticks of 128mb (I have 2 slots). It puzzles me that 1 stick of 256 wont work but 1 stick of 64mb will. Anyway i bought 1 stick of 128mb pc100 and installed it with the 64mb & now have 191mb of ram recognized.

Well thats what I'll do. Return my 256 stick and get 2 128 sticks. But I still don't see why it won't work because it says in the manual that it can support 256 modules.

My brother has a via motherboard that has a 66 mhz bus..........and up to P66 sdram. He bought some p133 sdram and it worked fine. Check your micron manual to make sure it supports p133.......if it supports p100 it most likely will run the p133....but at the slower speed. It sounds to me that either you need to put your ram in doubles or it doesnt support p133 sdram.

Since it is a 3 month old Micron, my first try would be to go to crucial.com and use their memory configurator to see what type of memory is compatible with your machine.

Just a thought, those 256MB SDRAMs can be real sensitive. I hope it wasn't accidentally dropped, also static electricity can ruin it. Have it checked by your local dealer or computer shop.

Had a similar problem when upgrading a couple of machines with ram recently. Both PC's already had a 256meg dimm in and I was going to upgrade by an extra 256.

The two new sticks I bought would not recognize or only recognize as 128.

Turned out that SSkt7/370 boards do not recognize the newer single sided pc133 dimms.

Replaced it for double sided dimms and the problem went away.
