Hi, we have an HP Pavilion XE783. Windows ME. We have had it since Dec.2000 and it freezes many times a day while online. We use Compuserve. Please help

Besides making sure you have all the lastest Windows updates, video and sound card driver updates and are using the latest Compuserve software, try a different ISP and see if you still have the problem.

Freeze or lose internet connection? Do any errors show up?
Also, disable your screen saver and see if that does not fix the problem.

Are you using AOL? AOL is a resource Hog ...
if so call consider freeing up resources with msconfig. Call HP support to obtain a list of which files are required to start up that machine and which are optional. It has been suggested that ME has a memory leak and over several hours windows will run out of memory. You can confirm this by rebooting your unit. The ultamate solution is to go(don't walk but run) to your local retailer and pickup an upgrade of Win 2000 and setup a duel boot on your unit. Win 2k does not has the resource issues of ME or 98.

The next time it freezes, press ctrl alt delete to see which programs are running. If you see Backweb at the top of the list, it could be causing the problem. HP supposedly uses Backweb to provide updates for your computer, but whenever my computer used to freeze up, Backweb was running in the background. It probably doesn't cause problems for broadband users, but I suspect that it clogs up connections for phone modems. The program can be removed permanently by using Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel. As soon as I got rid of it, my online freeze-up problem went away. I also suspect from how often Backweb used to run on my system, that it is really just a big fat piece of spyware.

your computer is still under waranty... check if you have WDM driver modem, windows ME cant handle those properly...
for the freezes call HP tech support and let them fix it

Try deleting your temporary internet files, your cookies, and your history, along with updating Compuserve, I doubt wdm you've a wdm driver, your system comes with the "lucent Cheetah, and wdm drivers generally cause the system to disconnect not freeze up. If the problem isn't resolved, Go ahead and give us a call, and we'll probably walk you through uninstalling some 'unwanted' programs as well as editing your startup menu, but i suspect doing the above will resolve the issue.
Good luck :) :)

If you've been using the computer for anything else before going online {wordprocessing, games etc.} it would be a good idea to reboot your machine before connecting to the internet. Restarting the computer will free up system resources.

i know some gfx cards have problems with ie5.5 where things such as scrolling down pages too fast and moving backgrounds in webpages cause a freeze. there is a fix on the microsoft site for a certain chipset but there are still other cards that experience the same problem.
