computer freezes as well as scandsk

every once in awhile my computer freezes... only when playing no one lives forever 2. When i reboot the first time scandisk normally freezes as well but when i reboot a second time everything runs fine. I am running a amd 1880+ not o/c with 512 mb of pc 133 ram a maxtor 40 gb 7200 rpm hd and 2 cd drives. Any suggestions? Thanks

I've had the same problem with my computer and ScanDisk freezing up...But I'm working on trying to figure out what's causing that as well...

I would recommend that you both run through the tips on the homepage on this response, especially with regard to updating chipset drivers and eliminating unwanted background programs, points 2,3,4,5,6,8,9,10,14,15

I bet you both have nVidia chip set Display adapters. If so, get the current nVidia reference drivers from the NVIDIA web site. There seems to be a lot of hang problems when you run an nVidia chip set adapter on an AMD processor system. Buss hang problems. Often these problems start after the nNidia card has been overheated. The newer drivers seem to fix many of these problems, but not all.

I do not have an nVidia chip set as for I am running an ATI Radeon 8500 LE video card. I downloaded the driver but it seems to make everything worse. Any suggestions?
