Subject: Computer freezes after 30 - 60 sec
Comment:

My computer freezes up after it's been running for about 30 seconds to a minute. The mouse moves and what not but i can't click anything. I can't figure out what is doing it. I have to do a system restore for a couple days before hand and it usually fixes the problem, but i'm getting tired of it. I've disabled ALL startup programs, still did it. Enabled all, still did it. Any help greatly appreciated.

Have you tried re-formating? That should clear up your problem. If you don't want to do something that drastic right now you can try re-installing Windows. Hope this helps..

Does it do it in safe mode?

To boot into safe mode:
Boot up.
After the POST(the memory check and the *beep*) start tapping on the F8 key over and over.
You should get a boot menu.
Choose #3 safe mode.

If it does not happen in safe mode, you are most likely dealing with a driver issue or there is conflicting hardware.

System specs?

I don't really want to re-format my hard drive, or reinstall windows for that matter. I have to run my computer in safe mode every time it does it because it will not run long enough with out locking up to run the system restore...... It does seem to work right then, which i don't understand, if i disable all start up programs and do a normal boot it will still lock up when it's acting up.

If you can run in safe mode without locking up... and if you turn off all of the startup group, you still have a problem... you are most likely having a problem with a driver.

Try this:
While in safe mode...
Go to start>>run>>msconfig.
Choose selective startup.
Take the checks out of Process System.ini and Process Win.ini.
Click apply>>ok>> and reboot normally.

Do you freeze up with these two unchecked?

If you do not, you need to look for drivers for your hardware. Which drivers are you using for your video card? The detonator 3's can be found here. Give them a shot. Do you have the latest motherboard drivers? I believe that particular board uses a VIA chipset. If it does you can find the drivers here.

Start digging and make sure you have the latest.

If, after you uncheck those to items from msconfig, you still have a freeze up problem.... Go back to msconig and do a totally clean boot by unchecking everything underneath Selective startup. If you can run normally after doing this, you need to do a little troubleshooting with msconfig, selectively checking things until you find the culprit.

Good luck!

Also, while you are in safe mode look in the device manager and under each device listing look for duplicate drive listings. For instance, if you have two driver listings for your display adapter. Normal mode will not show you these duplicate listings.
