Hi, I recently upgraded my presario 5101au from ME to XP (no Probs) Since then I brought a new computer and loaded xp to that system. Therefore I have attemped to factory restore my presario using the 3 quickrestore cd's. first I've FDISK the drive removing all partitions, then FDISK /mbr (no prob) reboot the computer with disk 1 of 3 caplock on numlock off, ctrl Q and system begins restore. Sounds good so far? 93% into restore on first cd error time?? volume label on N drive error?? insert disk 13?? I noted that the label quoted on the error is the same label of the first quickrestore disk when viewed on my other computer?? Any ideas, Compaq support says ???

Two thoughts. Did you Format the partition with DOS as a test of the drive. There may be errors on it that need to be cleared. You might boot with a Windows ME boot diskette, format it and try to run the DOS version of Scandisk to check for disk errors. Then go back and do the recovery CD.
Second, Compaq drive usually have a second partition on the drive. If it is not there or the restore disks can not create it for some reason, then stange errors can occur.
There are manufacture's disk test programs that can test the drive or erase it.

Go to download.com and get seatoold.exe.Use it to make floppy disk. You boot your system with this and test your hard drive. If it gives you a bad harddrive error. It is not always right.Sometimes using scandisk full and using always fix errors wil fix the Harddrive problem. If not seatoold is still a great software tool to have.
