Hi! I need help with a problem I've been having the past few days. My hp lap top will not stay on when I start it up and shuts down after a few minutes. The first few times I had this problem, a message came up when attempting to start windows that said to go to the command prompt and type scanreg/fix or else there will not be enough memory to start the computer. My lap top has gotten to the desktop page twice since this problem has started, and now all it will do is start running scandisk only to shut down half-way before its done. I know that I should probably just reformat my hard drive, but I really would like that only as a last resort. So tell me, what can I try? How do I make the command prompt appear/run my computer in dos mode so that I can run scanreg/fix? And is there anything else I can try?

Any help would be SO MUCH appreciated!

You could try booting your system from a Windows ME boot diskette and running SCANREG /Fix

Or you could try booting into Safe Mode and running SCANREG /fix.
