if you are using a winmodem, it may create a virtual com port that will not show up in device manager.
how about we start here...
what is the problem? when you try to get on the internet... does it say "Com Port already in use"?

if you have an internal modem you'll want to edit the win.ini file under
[Ports]
COM1:=921600,n,8,1,p
COM2:=921600,n,8,1,p
COM3:=921600,n,8,1,p
COM4:=921600,n,8,1,p

try setting your com to this value
this is what the device manager would change if you had an external modem.
