Comment: First let me say that this site has saved me more times than I can remember, so I want to thank everyone who posts answers to people's problems. This is the first time I haven't been able to solve my problem by referring to past posts. OK here we go -emachines 600is/192 ram/Windows(blow)ME/ hangs on startup, doing ctrl alt del only shows cmdninst, does the exact same thing in safe mode. I have a bootdisk. I have tried restoring the registry several times and its still the same story. I have been through the entire "windows won't start???" post and still nothing. I have read a lot of other posts and don't really see any answers there. I don't have an ME disk since it was preinstalled OEM. As far as what I've done/installed lately...I bought an Iomega USB external HD to back up this and another computer. Initially it worked fine but now not at all (precrash). I have spent the last week or so trying to update drivers, firmware etc. to try and solve this problem but to no avail. I have also been in the process of migrating from the other computer to this one so I have installed a ton of things on the new one lately so that makes it pretty hard to nail down what the problem might be. I have also installed a zip drive and a cd burner that I took out of my old computer. Everything was working except for the external HD. In general my ME experience has sucked. I regularly get all sorts of error messages, too many to begin listing or remember. I have had to restore the registry countless times. I would just go ahead and completely reinstall it but I'm a college student who is currently knee deep in papers/projects all of which are on the crashed computer so I need really need to recover them if I can. Can someone send me the cmdninst.exe file? I read somewhere that that might work and I can't get it off the OEM disk. I would go ahead and buy XP Pro or home if it would solve my problems beyond this current disaster. Would it actually help? Can anyone help me out? Please? Thanks

Reply: (edit)I had read about doing that but hadn't tried it out of fear of losing files. So will I lose files? I already have a boot disk.
