Cmdinst/Commctrl.dll error? HELP!

I'm trying to install my HP printer (USB port) in Windows Me. I get through all the "Add New Hardware" windows, but right at the end I get the following error:
"Cmdinst has caused an error in COMMCTRL.DLL. Cmdinst will now close."
I've tried using the updated driver off the HP site, the original installation CD, deleting all my Windows Temp files and the HP registry key, uninstalling, reinstalling, nothing works. I always end up with the same error. HP support is unhelpful. Can anyone help?
