You dont need an external tool for checking and correcting the registry. In Start/Run/type in scanreg and it does a minimum clean up and correction of the registry. You can also do it in dos mode.

Hey, guys, really no need to be fearful of registry cleaners - they're part of computer life and here to stay. JV16 PowerToys is an advancement on RegCleaner which are both freeware products by the same Finnish author,
a young man who has just spent some time in the army earlier this year.

Both have backup facilities to fall back on in the event that entries removed may be restored. I have been using MS RegClean, RegCleaner for sometime now - and have not encountered any major problems. EasyCleaner 1.7 gave me some problems with regard to the removal of four files required for Windows Me Help and Restore. Since then I've learned you can instruct the programme to skip the Help files. Thanks to Computer Net posts.

What you should be careful of is not to touch the Hardware Configuration button under Tools in both JV16PowerToys and RegCleaner unless you intend to reconfigurate your hardware. Both JV16 PowerToys and Easy Cleaner have duplicate files remover function - and the best amongst us (not including myself), I would imagine would be extremely wary of eliminating files. Files removed today may be required tomorrow.

Apart from the above I cannot think of anything else which would be alarming. Act sensibly, coolly and with due diligence and caution - and all should be OK. And even if error does occur, the world will still revolve and you'll know better the next time. Its all positive. :-)

If you don't clean it,

a) it will be bigger
b) it will have obsolete and erroneous entries
c) it will be more likely to cause errors.

It's like changing the oil in your car. Some people who don't change it regularly may get away with it. Or maybe a better analogy is that not cleaning out the registry is like not taking out the garbage.

I'd rather be safe than sorry.

I really don't understand the registry or the way it works. I don't even know why it's needed. In the good old days programs were stand-alones. Now, almost every piece of software is recorded in the registry. So, every piece of shareware that you tried and deleted, or every piece of trialware that you downloaded--which then expired and you deleted--still has an entry in your registry. I'm not sure, but I think even deleted fonts are still recorded in your registry.

Scanreg does none of this.

This is what (MS says) scanreg does.

If it's BAD, the registry is replaced. There's no "minimum clean up and correction of the registry."

Per Q183887: Windows Registry Checker automatically scans the system registry for invalid entries and empty data blocks when it is started. If invalid registry entries are detected, Windows Registry Checker automatically restores a previous day's backup.
