Hey just a couple of questions,
1.) What program best cleans up a majority of my computer?
2.) Is there a fast/easy way to block/unsubscribe from all those emails that advertise stuff that is unwanted?
Thanks in advance

Also, I'm cleaning out my Startup program...
Run, msconfig..that stuff. I can't tell if some of the programs listed are vital or can be removed. Is there a way of finding out if my computer needs these files to run or not?

To do a quick disk clean up and clean out temp files that you do not need, run (Start - Programs - Accessories - System Tools -Disk CleanUp) on your C: drive. Do this every day or so.
To really clean out the IE files, cookies and index files (which have a complete history of every web site you have visited), get a copy of the DELINDEX.BAT file and place it on your C:\ drive. Then boot from a Windows ME Startup boot diskette and run the batch file per its instructions. It will clear out INDEX.DAT files and junk, so that IE can run better. The problem is you have to boot from a Windows diskette to run this, and it will clean out cookies and site passwords if you use them. So read its instructions first.
If your system is stable and upto date on on the Windows UpDate site and you know you will not be needing the System Restore function any time soon, you can free up all the System Checkpoints by disabling and then reenabling System Restore, to delete all the old restore points. Go to (Start - Settings - Control Panel - System - Performance tab - File System - Troubleshooting tab), and check the box for "Disable System Restore", click Apply and exit. System will reboot. Allow STMGR time to delete all the old restore files, wait for no disk activity for at least a minute. Then run DEFRAG on the drive. Next go back into the Troubleshooting tab and uncheck the box to enable System Restore again. Then use the Hard Disk tab to set the "System Restore disk space use:" slide bar to only use about 1000Mb (or less) of disk space. Also, make sure system is up to date on the Windows UpDate site, as there is a year old fix for System Restore not working correctly.

"2.) Is there a fast/easy way to block/unsubscribe from all those emails that advertise stuff that is unwanted?"
There is no possible way to unsubscribe from any of that email. The majority of it comes from spammers who illegaly pulled your email address off of the web or out of a hat. They and many others will continue to send you spam. Replying to or attempting to unsubscribe does not work. It either confirms your address or is just a waste of time. Your only option is to filter it with software like mailwasher. Filtering could block valid email so be careful.
Hotmail, your isp, any websites you have shopped at may also send you spam. To get rid of this :
Contact the websites you have shopped at and tell them to remove you from there list. If they continue to spam you report them to there isp.
If your isp spams you [aol, compuserve] cancel your account and sign up for earthlink or at&t. These isp's also spam you but at least you can block them with a mail client or mailwasher. AOL fights other spammers but they think its perfectly OK to spam you with there partners junk.
Hotmail is spamming you with there partners junk? Go into hotmails options and opt out of the junk mail. Dont bother blocking sender because none of the return addresses in spam are real. You could attempt to set filters in hotmails options to block emails with keywords in the subject line but thanks to MSN your limited to 10 filters now. This new policy change makes it pointless to even bother. Thanks for nothing hotmail!
Finally.. if your getting tons of spam per day.. open a new hotmail account, never post it on the web anywhere, block any of your friends or family who send you greeting card garbage or forwarded jokes, poetry or whatever. This will limit your spam but it wont stop it.
Get mailwasher from mailwasher.net. Configure your mail accounts and run it before opening your mail client. Bounce or delete all the junk mail or viruses then download the real mail with your mail client [outlook express etc.]
