I have 5.50, but 128-bit encryption is missing. I have followed instructions in Microsoft article with name listed on subject line - when trying to re-register schannell.dll, rsabase.dll, and rsaenh.dll files I get an error that says "Load Library failed get last error returns 0x00000485. I have no clue what that means - or what I am supposed to do next?????????????????

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated! Thank you!!

Ren Man - thanks for your link. She has tried to follow the directions in that MS article but gets the error message as she posted above.

The last reply in that post you refer to did it differently, but I don't exactly understand his directions. Any more assistance welcome - Thanks.

Amber - Do a search on your computer for:

advapi32.dll

When found, right click on it and choose Properties.

Go to the version tab.

Post back where the file is located and what the version number is.

It's the wrong version and is most likely causing your problem..

Try reextracting it and putting it in the system folder. Some of this will have to be done from DOS, so you will need a bootdisk handy. To do this:

Go to start>>run>>msconfig
Click Extract one file.
Type advapi32.dll
Click start.
For where the CAB files are try:
c:\windows\options\install
For where you want to put the file type:
c:\
Click ok and follow the rest of the wizard until it is finished.

Now... put the bootdisk in.
Reboot.
Choose Without Cd rom support.
At the a:\> prompt type:

move c:\advapi32.dll c:\windows\system

If all goes well, nothing happened.

If you get a "Bad Command or Filename" error type these commands and press enter after each one:

c:
copy advapi32.dll c:\windows\system

If all goes well nothing will happen... if nothing happens type:

del advapi32.dll

Pull out the bootdisk and reboot.

Try to reregister schannel.dll, rsabase.dll, and rsaenh.dll again.

To do this:

Go to start>>run
Type:

regsvr32 c:\windows\system\schannel.dll
regsvr32 c:\windows\system\rsabase.dll
regsvr32 c:\windows\system\rsaenh.dll

See if they won't register themselves now.

I forgot a step. You need to rename the old file before you can move or copy it into the system folder. So... After you boot to a bootdisk type each of these commands and press enter after each one:

c:
cd windows
cd system
a:
move c:\advapi32.dll c:\windows\system

If the move command does not work, try copy then delete as I mentioned above.

Ok... it's late... and I forgot the rename step again. The DOS commands in the above post should be:

c:
cd windows
cd system
ren advapi32.dll advapi32.old
a:
move c:\advapi32.dll c:\windows\system

...now I'm done for the night. I will check this tomorrow morning. If you have any problems, just post.

newgrl -

I went to Amber's today and we fixed the advapi32.dll. Now she has the correct version. But she still was unable to extract the schannel.dll and other 2 files; I can't remember the error message. (Amber has a 3 year old, so is busy and doesn't get a lot of time on the computer.)

She is very frustrated - would it be easier to reinstall windows me? or would that even work? Should she reformat the HD and start over?

Thank you so much for your help!
